Homophobic, conservative New York security guard Walt (Robert De Niro) suffers a stroke, leaving him partially paralysed and unable to speak properly. As part of his rehabilitation, he reluctantly hires his drag queen neighbour Rusty (Philip Seymour Hoffman) for singing lessons. Despite their initial hostility, they form an unlikely bond.
Awarded three out of four stars from critic Roger Ebert, who said “Hoffman … shows he’s one of the best new character actors, able to take a flamboyant role and find the quiet details in it”.
