Synopsis
1853, British Colonies of Australia: following a petty larceny, Daniel "Mad Dog" Morgan is sentenced to 12 years in prison. Upon his release, he is saved from injury by Billy, a young aborigine, and then becomes a bushranger, a notorious bandit in rebellion against the brutal and vicious local authorities. A manhunt begins, but for Mad Dog, there is no question of laying down their arms.
For his only Australian film, Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now) interprets with panache one of the most famous bandits of the Australian continent. Philippe Mora (Les Entrailles de l'enfer, Communion) signs a local color, hallucinated, brutal and poetic western, a libertarian "Once upon a time in Australia" which reflects back to back the violence of a man pushed to the limit and the hypocrisy of the system that created it. Photographed in cinemascope by Mike Molloy (Barry Lyndon), MAD DOG MORGAN is one of the flagship titles of the Australian New Wave.
