Synopsis
Matsugoro is a rickshaw driver. His quick-wittedness and his optimistic temperament make him a person appreciated by the inhabitants of his city. One day, Matsu comes to the aid of an injured boy, Toshio. The parents, Kotaro and Yoshioko, hire his services to transport the boy to the doctor and back. Matsu takes a liking to this family. When Toshio's father dies, Matsu becomes like a surrogate father to the boy, whom he helps raise. He secretly falls in love with Yoshioko, but is aware that there is a class divide between them. Matsu thinks he will only ever be a rickshaw driver for her and her son.
