Synopsis
After years of absence, Ransom Stoddard, an elderly and well-known senator, attends with his wife Hallie the funeral of his old friend, Tom Doniphon, in the small town of Shinbone. Intrigued, local journalists question the politician about his past. Stoddard evokes the time when freshly graduated in law, he arrived with the ideal of bringing legality to the West. But, shortly before arriving in Shinbone, his stagecoach was attacked by a notorious bandit, Liberty Valance. At the time, Stoddard had allied himself with Doniphon to oppose the mobster.
