Synopsis
Adapted from the novel by Mikhail Sholokhov. July 1942. The Soviet army retreats. A handful of exhausted men, all that remains of the regiment, defend the approaches to the river. It may seem at times that war is just a bad dream. On the way, the tracks of tank tracks, but everywhere else the weary grasses of summer, the dull shine of the saline lands, the mounds trembling in the overheated air of the heat wave... The absurd encounter of the sun-drenched earth and the inhuman war machine gives rise to an authentically biblical situation, a metaphor for the imperishable life confronted with evil forces.
