Synopsis
 In the bus that runs along the Canal du Centre, Jean, fleeing the police and armed with false papers, meets a peasant woman, the widow Couderc. She is a woman who grows old alone and persists in keeping her farm, a possession that her husband's family disputes. In the farm opposite lives a 16-year-old single mother. Jean will take them as mistresses. Between these two women, poles apart from each other, he will experience a happiness doomed in advance.
