Synopsis
- Love Letter (1953):
Reikichi, a demobilized sailor, is obsessed with Michiko, a woman he loved before the war. When he's not wandering the streets of Tokyo in search of his lost love, he frequents his brother Hiroshi, who dreams of opening a bookstore, or Naoto, a comrade who has become a public writer. The latter writes letters in English for young women abandoned by American GIs, from whom they claim money. One day, Michiko bursts in to have a letter written to her...
- The Moon Has Rise (1955):
Mr. Asai lives in Nara with his three daughters: the eldest Chizuru, who returned to the family home after the death of her husband; the youngest Ayako, of marriageable age but in no hurry to leave her family; and the youngest Setsuko, the most exuberant of the three sisters who dreams of moving to the capital. The latter is very close to Shoji, Chizuru's young brother-in-law who lives in a temple near the Asai. One day, he receives a visit from an old friend, Amamiya, who fondly remembers Ayako, whom she met during her youth. Setsuko is convinced that he still has feelings for his sister and will do everything to force fate...
- Eternal Motherhood (1955):
Hokkaido, in northern Japan. Fumiko lives an unhappy marriage. Her only consolation are her two children, whom she adores. A poetry club becomes his main escape, and allows him to go to town. She finds there Taku Hori, the husband of her friend Kinuko who, like her, writes poems. She feels more and more attraction to him. But Fumiko discovers that she has breast cancer. While her poems are published, she has to undergo a mastectomy. The young woman then discovers passion with a journalist who comes to see her at the hospital...
- The Wandering Princess (1960):
In 1937, when Japan occupied Manchuria, Ryuko, a young girl from a good family, learned that she had been chosen on a photo to marry the younger brother of the Emperor of Manchuria. Here she is forced to leave Japan and acclimatize to her new life as a princess. A baby girl is born, and Ryuko seems happy at the Palace. But soon the Soviet troops land. Ryuko is forced to flee on foot, accompanied by her child but also by the Empress herself...
- Women's Night (1961):
The young Kuniko is a resident of a rehabilitation center for former prostitutes. Despite the kindness of the director, life is not easy, and like all her classmates, she hopes to get by.
